The Breath of Lent

DAY 8 OF 40

Perseverance… is an old-fashioned word for determination, grit, resolve, tenacity, and dedication. When we hear these definitions, a strength stirs within us. That "stick-to-it-iveness" that is so loved in movies where the underdog prevails and becomes the hero.

Perseverance takes time. It takes not giving up when strength seems to be in short supply. We want to get into a prayer line, get prayed over, and that's it…we are mature, have overcome, and are moving onward and upward in our life with Christ.

Time is not our friend these days. We don't have to be patient, for the world is at our fingertips. James reminds us that perseverance is a slow lesson to learn. It only comes as we stand the test of time. That does not mean we do not do our due diligence. This waiting is filled with idleness, tapping your fingers on the table as you wait. Dive deeper into the Word and ask God to lift the words and phrases that will bring transformation to your soul from the page. Spend time in His presence. Talk less and listen more, and the moment when you think you hear nothing and that your quiet time with Him was to no avail…wait some more. You can do nothing wrong in silence and solitude, but leave too soon!

Persevere today! It may be in small measure, or it may be an overwhelming feat of faith. Use your breath prayer to help you grow in perseverance.

Inhale: I can do all this

Exhale: Through him who gives me strength.
