DAY 5 OF 14

THE EXAMINATION: A FEARLESS INVENTORY

Today’s step, Step Four, invites us into a searching and fearless moral inventory. However, most of us can relate that fear can easily block our path to healing and wholeness in this step. Fear has a way of entangling every part of our lives, our thoughts, and actions. Yet the practice of a fear inventory gives us a way to not only face but also dismantle fear’s hold on us.

So we begin. The first part is to name your fears. Often, we avoid this because it feels too vulnerable or overwhelming. But naming our fears brings them into the light, where they lose some of their power. It could be a fear of failure, rejection, or loss. Writing them down prevents rumination, turning the vague cloud of anxiety into something specific we can address.

Next, we ask if there’s an action we are being called to take. Fear, when rightly used, is a gift—it alerts us to potential harm and invites us to respond. Sometimes that action is practical, like paying a debt. Other times it’s relational, like having a hard conversation. Avoidance strengthens fear, but action—no matter how small—can be the start of courage.

Finally, we ask God for the grace to be present in this moment. Fear often pulls us into the future, imagining all that could go wrong. But with God’s help, we can release our fears and return to the present, trusting Him to hold our tomorrows.

TODAY'S INVITATION:

Take the fear inventory. Name your fears clearly and truthfully. Then ask: Is there an action I am being called to take? Finally, ask God for the grace to be fully present in this moment, trusting Him to carry your fears and lead you forward.
