PART FIVE
Does God's Silence Indicate His Absence or Presence?
When you experience hardship and suffering, it’s easy to feel like God is silent or absent. The question arises: Is God’s silence a sign of His absence, or is He still present with you?
Spoiler alert: God’s silence in your suffering is not an absence of concern. In fact, His silence is a sanctifying gift, allowing you to seek Him and experience His presence in a deeper way.
Often, suffering feels so overwhelming that it’s all we can see, as the author of Lamentations expresses: “Is any suffering like my suffering?” (Lamentations 1:12). When the pain is intense, it can feel like no one else understands or that God Himself has withdrawn.
Yet, even in the lament of Lamentations, God’s silence does not imply His absence. In fact, this book, being part of Scripture, shows us that God hears, sees, and validates our suffering.
God’s silence offers dignity to your pain. It’s like the poignant silence at a memorial service—painful yet essential for grieving and reflecting. Psalm 46 invites us to “be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Even in silence, God’s presence is assured.
Consider Elijah’s experience. After witnessing God’s mighty works, he fled in fear, only to find that God was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire—but in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:11-12). God’s voice doesn’t always come in the ways we expect. Sometimes, we need to lean in to hear His whisper or even turn back to Him, as Moses did when God spoke through the burning bush (Exodus 3:7-10).
God sees, hears, and knows your suffering—and He is still working, even when He is silent.
Suffering is never wasted in God’s plan. Job, who experienced tremendous loss, said, “But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction” (Job 36:15). God doesn’t always deliver us from suffering, but He promises to deliver us through it. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego weren’t kept from the fire, but they were brought through it, just as God will bring you through your trials.
His silence is not a sign of abandonment but an invitation to trust Him deeper.
