Prepare the Way: A 21-Day Reading Plan Through John by Justeina BrownleeSample
Day 3: Are You Decreasing?
Read John 3
In John 3, we see a remarkable moment in John the Baptist’s ministry. After spending time preaching and baptizing large crowds, John steps back when Jesus begins His Ministry. John's response? “He must become greater; I must become less.” John wasn’t focused on his own fame or success—he was committed to pointing others to Jesus.
John’s humility is a powerful example for us. He knew his role wasn’t to build a personal following but to lead people to Christ. When Jesus took the spotlight, John gladly stepped aside, finding joy in seeing Jesus exalted. His entire life had been dedicated to preparing the way for Jesus, and when the time came, John’s decreasing allowed Christ to increase.
In a world that encourages self-promotion and personal achievement, John’s attitude can feel countercultural. But true Purpose is found when we choose to lift Jesus higher, not ourselves. We can do this by redirecting praise from ourselves to God, serving others without seeking recognition, and being willing to surrender control to God’s Plan, even when it’s hard.
The more we decrease, the more space we make for Jesus to work in and through us. So, how can you decrease today to let Christ increase in your life?
Reflection Questions:
- In what areas of your life are you holding onto control instead of surrendering to God?
- How can you shift the focus from your own success to glorifying Jesus this week?
