Being revolutionary = fun!?
If you put new wine into old wineskins, the new, still slightly sparkling wine will cause the old wineskins to burst. And, of course, you don’t want that.
So, the simple conclusion is: new wine goes into new wineskins. They’re flexible and can handle the ‘pressure’ of the new wine.
There’s a principle in that.
In the episode of The Chosen we’re reflecting on today, Philip casually remarks, “Being revolutionary is fun!” Well, for some, it might be, and for others, it may feel quite daunting.
Earlier in this series, Jesus said, “I didn’t come to start a revolt, but a revolution.” Another one-liner that makes you think.
Not a revolt but a revolution… And a revolution is fun…?!
What kind of revolution?
One of humility, gentleness, love, hunger and thirst for righteousness, of purity, peace – Shalom.
Do you long for such a revolution? Because that kind of revolution is ‘fun’! Not fun as in easy and ‘chill,’ but ‘fun’ in a way that sets things in motion, sees people, and restores relationships. A revolution that makes Jesus Himself visible.
What do we need for this? New forms. New wine belongs in new wineskins. Religion doesn’t fit. Those skins will tear.
Today, set aside the wineskins of religion and walk freely in your relationship with Jesus. Let humility, gentleness, love, Shalom, and all those other qualities flow through you.
You and I are part of a revolution. One that begins (and ends) with Jesus Himself and flows through us to the world around us.
Take the following questions to reflect on:
- What does revolution mean to you?
- Was Jesus revolutionary?
- Are there any ‘old wineskins’ you need to let go of?
- What is Jesus asking of you today? What kind of ‘revolutionary’ act can you do today in His name?
Prayer: “Lord Jesus, absolutely – You were revolutionary. You turned things upside down. From worldly ways back to how You intended it from the beginning. Lord, do that in my life (even though it feels a bit daunting). May I join Your ‘revolution’ today? Work through me, Lord. Here I am. Amen.”
