Stories of the Kingdom: The Parables of Jesus

DAY 7 OF 39

Parable of the Wise and Foolish Servants

In Matthew 24:45-51 and Luke 12:42-48, Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish servants. In this story, a master entrusts his servants with the responsibility of managing his household while he is away. The wise servant faithfully carries out his duties, serving his fellow servants and fulfilling his master's wishes, even in the master's absence. In contrast, the foolish servant mistreats his fellow servants and indulges in drunkenness, thinking his master's return is delayed.

When the master unexpectedly returns, he rewards the wise servant for his faithfulness and appoints him as ruler over all his possessions. However, the foolish servant is punished severely for his negligence and lack of preparation. Jesus concludes the parable by warning His disciples to be vigilant and faithful, for they do not know the day or hour of His return.

How does the concept of accountability play a role in the parable of the wise and foolish servants?

About this Plan

Stories of the Kingdom: The Parables of Jesus

Jesus was a master storyteller. He knew that the timeless principles He was trying to articulate would be best remembered through storytelling. He often spoke through parables to (1) communicate a more profound truth, (2) make His teachings more accessible to those who were ready to hear them, and (3) confound those who refused to listen. Parables were shaped to convey a single thought, so don't get lost in the details wondering what each part means. Absorb the story and allow Jesus to communicate His truth to your heart.
