Stories of the Kingdom: The Parables of Jesus

DAY 23 OF 39

Parable of the Lowest Seat

In Luke 14:7-14, Jesus shares a parable about taking the lowest seat at a banquet while attending a dinner hosted by a prominent Pharisee. Jesus observed guests jostling for the places of honor. He advises them against seeking the most prestigious seats, cautioning that they may be embarrassed if a more distinguished guest arrives and is given precedence. Instead, Jesus advises His listeners to take the lowest seat, allowing the host to invite them to move up if deemed appropriate. By humbling themselves, they may find honor in the end.

Jesus then extends this lesson beyond the context of social gatherings, encouraging His listeners to invite the poor, crippled, lame, and blind to their feasts instead of seeking the company of those who can repay them. He suggests that true blessings come from acts of kindness to those who cannot reciprocate.

How does this parable challenge our attitudes toward status and honor?

About this Plan

Stories of the Kingdom: The Parables of Jesus

Jesus was a master storyteller. He knew that the timeless principles He was trying to articulate would be best remembered through storytelling. He often spoke through parables to (1) communicate a more profound truth, (2) make His teachings more accessible to those who were ready to hear them, and (3) confound those who refused to listen. Parables were shaped to convey a single thought, so don't get lost in the details wondering what each part means. Absorb the story and allow Jesus to communicate His truth to your heart.
