Advent Guide: You BelongSample
Newfound Joy
The Christmas season once again has a special meaning for me. I've found joy in my life again. It wasn't always that way.
In December 2019, we lost our mother. She was the rock and foundation of our family, and we all felt our world had crumbled. While I retreated into my shell during this sorrow, I failed to see the blessings being bestowed on me and my family.
About one week after our mom passed, my great-granddaughter was born. While I celebrated her birth, I couldn't find happiness or joy in the precious moments I spent with her. I know my grandson was hurt by my lack of enthusiasm for my first great-grandchild.
Shortly after that, COVID-19 shut the world down and I sunk deeper into my depression. At the time, I didn't acknowledge I was depressed and didn't seek any treatment. But I knew my life was lacking something. We stopped attending church. I quit prayer and even believing life would one day be joyful again.
I came to Buckner in March 2022 and my life now has newfound joy, purpose, and meaning. I began reading the Bible again and soon after that, I started attending church.
I found that life truly had a new meaning for me. As I continue to read the Bible and study the Scriptures, I have come to lean into John 16:22 in particular.
I can truly say that I understand and relate to this Scripture. I believe I will see my mom again and that God's joy fills my heart and soul.
Since 2022, there have been times of sadness and other losses, but I can now enjoy my children, grandchildren, and my great-granddaughter.
I now find joy in the simple things in life like watering my plants, reading and spending quiet time at home with two of my adult children, and reconnecting with old friends. The holiday season is now something I look forward to and want to celebrate and enjoy with my family.
Joy can truly satisfy my heart in a way that is meaningful.
"For this is the day that the Lord has made; rejoice and be glad in it." – Psalm 118:24
