Love’s Basic Training

The adults in your life have tried to teach you good manners for a reason. It’s not so that you will be polite when someone visits or shows respect for older people. The best reason is that when showing manners, you demonstrate what God describes as love. Good manners mean you will be kind, respectful, humble, honoring to others, calm, and patient. All of these are choices we make when it comes to love. If you think manners require you to suppress personal rudeness until a person leaves, you must read the verses again. Manners are basic training for how to love your family, friends, strangers, and the girl you marry someday. Manners aren’t temporary restrictions but permanent guards encouraging us to love.

Prayer: Dear God, what I say and how I say it are important to You. How I act and respond demonstrates whether I’m letting You change me for the better. Who I’m kind to and how unlimited I am with manners helps me learn important ways to show Your love to anyone. Help me honor people I don’t even know through the choice to love—using manners. Amen.
