The Strangers on the RoadSample
The Man On The Road
What Do We Know About The Man?
During a journey from Jerusalem to Jericho, he was ambushed by robbers who stripped him of his clothes and beat him almost to the point of death. Unless this man had committed a sin or offense against the robbers that the Scripture doesn’t mention, it seems as though he did nothing to bring this abuse upon himself.
How Does The Man Point To Jesus?
Not long after Jesus told this story to the lawyer, He Himself would journey to Jerusalem, the city from which the man had departed on his way to Jericho. While in Jerusalem, He would be arrested, sentenced to the cross despite being innocent, and subjected to stripping and beating at the hands of Roman soldiers.
How Do These Answers Impact Us?
Similar to the man in this parable, Jesus was stripped and beaten despite being innocent of wrongdoing. As awful as this moment was, it was necessary for our redemption. The prophet Isaiah describes it this way: “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” Jesus endured stripping and beating so that we could be clothed in grace and mercy. If you feel blindsided and beaten up by life, Jesus understands and can heal your pain!
Big Idea:
Similar to the man in this parable, Jesus was stripped and beaten despite being innocent of wrongdoing. He endured this pain so we could be clothed in grace and mercy. When we experience difficult moments, we can rest assured that Jesus understands our pain!
Let's Think About This
Question #1: What is one thing that “jumped out” to you while reading Luke 10:30?
Question#2: Have you ever felt like the man in the parable? Have you ever been hurt by someone or something, even though you did nothing wrong?
Question #3: Why was it necessary for Jesus to be stripped and beaten? How does this give you hope during difficult situations?

About this Plan
During this seven-day Bible study, we will take a closer look at each character in the parable of the Good Samaritan and seek to answer three questions: 1. What do we know about the stranger? 2. How does the stranger point to Jesus? 3. How do these answers impact us? As we examine Luke 10:25-37, it becomes clear that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus are revealed in every detail of this famous story!
