ABBA - Made in Our Father's Image

DAY 2 OF 10

Day 2: The Many Names of God in the Old Testament

The Old Testament introduces us to God through a rich tapestry of names, each revealing a unique facet of His divine character and nature. From "Elohim," the mighty Creator who spoke the universe into existence, to "El Shaddai," the Almighty who establishes covenants, and "Jehovah Jireh," the Provider who meets our every need, these names are more than just titles—they are windows into understanding who God is and how He relates to His people.

But how do these powerful, awe-inspiring names align with the image of God as a loving Father, particularly as portrayed in the New Testament parable of the prodigal son? In this parable, Jesus presents a Father who is not only mighty but also merciful, not only sovereign but also tender-hearted and compassionate. By examining the Old Testament names of God in light of the Father in the prodigal son story, we discover a profound truth: God's nature is consistent and unchanging. He is both the God of the cosmos and the God who runs to embrace His wayward children. His might does not diminish His mercy; rather, His sovereignty magnifies His grace.

This understanding invites us to trust in a God who is fully capable of meeting every need and yet tender enough to welcome us back with open arms, no matter how far we have strayed.

Reflection:

  • Exploring the Names of God:

Each name of God in the Old Testament carries deep significance and reveals different aspects of His divine character. What do these names teach us about God’s nature, power, and relationship with His people?

  • Comparing the Names with the Father in the Prodigal Son Parable:

In the parable of the prodigal son, Jesus portrays God as a loving and forgiving Father. Reflect on how the names of God, such as "El Shaddai" or "Jehovah Jireh," align with this image of a Father who is both strong and compassionate.

  • The Consistency of God’s Nature:

Despite the different names and descriptions, God’s nature remains consistent across both the Old and New Testaments. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Reflect on how this consistency brings assurance and stability to your faith.

Closing Thought: As we delve into the many names of God, we are reminded that our understanding of Him must be as multifaceted as the names He reveals. He is the Creator, the Almighty, the Provider, the Eternal One, and yet He is also our Father, full of love and compassion. Let this understanding deepen your relationship with God, knowing that He is both powerful enough to rule the universe and loving enough to care for your every need.
