31 Values to Pray for Your KidsSample
Self-Control
As parents, we hope to see our children grow into mature individuals with the strength and wisdom to exercise self-control in all areas of their lives. In a world full of distractions and temptations, self-control is a vital quality that helps them stay on the path of righteousness and fulfill God's purpose for their lives.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:6, we are reminded to be alert and self-controlled, aware of our actions and the influences around us. We pray that our children will develop the discernment to recognize when they need to exercise self-control and the strength to focus on what is good and right.
Proverbs 25:28 compares a person without self-control to a city with broken-down walls, vulnerable to attack. We desire that our children understand the importance of self-discipline, recognizing that it protects their hearts and minds from harmful influences and helps them build a robust and resilient character.
The story of David in 1 Samuel 24 provides a powerful example of self-control in action. Despite having the opportunity to harm his enemy, King Saul, David chose to restrain himself and act with integrity. While David is not always the strongest example of self-control, this choice of purposeful self-control brings a huge blessing from God. David’s family was promised to rule forever because Jesus Christ would come from his lineage. We should pray that our children will learn from David's example that true strength lies in controlling their impulses and acting according to God's will, reaping the blessing that comes from self-control.
Pray:
Father, in Jesus’ name, we lift our children to you, asking that you help them cultivate the quality of self-control. Grant them the wisdom to recognize situations where they need to exercise restraint and the strength to follow through. May they be alert and discerning, always seeking to do what is right in your eyes. Protect their hearts and minds from the distractions and temptations of this world, and help them build a robust and resilient character rooted in your Word. May they, like David, choose integrity and righteousness over impulse and desire. We pray in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus, amen.
