DAY 8 OF 12

The Confidence of a Diva

The story of the sisters Rachel and Leah is deep and timeless. Rachel, the youngest, was considered beautiful, while Leah had weak eyes, alluding to her not being as vivacious as her younger sister. Both were single and living at home with their father.

One day, their cousin Jacob arrives in town. He falls in love with Rachel, asks for her hand in marriage, and pledges to work for seven years as payment for her bride price. But on their wedding night, the girl’s father, Laban, brings Leah to Jacob instead of Rachel. Jacob is livid, so one week later, he is given Rachel also after promising to work an additional seven years for her hand.

When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he enabled her to have children, but Rachel could not conceive. This caused friction between the sisters and a big headache for Jacob. Yet they became the mothers who birthed the twelve tribes of Israel.

Rachel didn’t suffer from low self-esteem as she probably heard she was beautiful all the time. However, love was not enough for her. She wanted children. While Leah was quite fertile, she was driven to produce as a way to gain love, affection, and attention. Both of them were victims of comparison. They both lacked the understanding of how God works and relied on their strength to get what they wanted.

Leah finally realized that she could not make anyone love her; instead, God was her source and her reason to praise. Rachel, at the end of her struggle, realized that simply asking God was enough to cause Him to move on her behalf.

Women have been pitted against one another as far back as biblical times. More often than not, a man is at the center of the war. True divas are secure enough in themselves and their relationship with God to see themselves and others around them as the assets God intended them to be. They know that other women are not their enemies. And when sisters choose to stand together, they are a force to be reckoned with!

Div-otion

Dear heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I looked past Your blessings to envy others. Help me to trust Your choices and Your timing for my life in every regard. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
