Foundations of Faith: What Does It Mean to Be a Christian?Sample
Living Generously
Yesterday’s focus was on living generously as you serve others. Today let’s focus on living generously by serving others with your time, resources, and talents.
In the Old Testament, the Jewish people gave their “first fruits” back to the Lord, meaning the best of their crops and livestock, called a tithe. In Leviticus 27:30, we see that this tithe was one-tenth of their total.
However, in the New Testament, Paul tells the church in Corinth, “‘You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves a person who gives cheerfully” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Today, many believers still follow the example of tithing 10% back to God by giving financially to their church. Some also give their time and talents as part of their offering back to God. If you have a talent for teaching, you can lead a Sunday School class. If you’re a talented musician, you can participate on the worship team. If you are unsure about your talents, you can use your time to serve where needed, like the greeting team or cleanup crew.
God cares more about your heart’s intention than what you actually give. He doesn’t need you to give anything to fulfill His plans, but He generously invites you to participate in experiencing the joy of blessing others.
No matter what you give, talk to God about it first. These steps can help you shape your prayer time with Him.
- Thank God for all He has provided for you (Deuteronomy 8:18), acknowledging that all you have comes from Him.
- Ask God to show you where there are needs.
- Ask God to reveal to you what He is calling you to give.
- Ask God to give you a cheerful heart that desires to align with His Will.
- Thank Him for the opportunity to give back a small portion of the time, talent, and resources He’s provided for you.
When you give and obediently follow God’s prompting, He will bless you in ways you never see coming!
“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.”
- Proverbs 3:9
