Becoming More Like Christ Through Your Church

DAY 5 OF 7

Grow as a Disciple of Christ in the Church by Giving Abundantly

Becoming a disciple of Christ involves a commitment to living out His teachings in every aspect of our lives, including our approach to giving. Jesus frequently reminded His followers that their giving was a reflection of their hearts. In Matthew 6:21, Jesus said, “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be” (NLT). This profound statement challenges us to consider where we place value and how our generosity—or lack thereof—reveals the condition of our hearts.

Giving is a true act of discipleship that helps us grow as Christians. It is an outward expression of our faith and trust in God’s provision. When we give, we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and that we are merely stewards of His resources. This act of surrender and obedience draws us closer to God, helping us develop a deeper reliance on Him and a greater sensitivity to the needs of others.

When we give through our local church, we know exactly how the funds are used to minister and spread the gospel. Churches typically provide transparent records of their financial allocations, ensuring that contributions support various ministries, outreach programs, and missionary efforts. This knowledge gives us confidence that our giving directly impacts our community and the world, advancing the Kingdom of God. Additionally, giving within the church context fosters a sense of unity and collective purpose as we work together to fulfill the Great Commission.

Many of us have been blessed with abundant resources, so we should joyfully give some away. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul encourages believers, “You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully’” (NLT). This verse highlights the importance of giving with a joyful heart, not out of obligation but out of gratitude for the blessings we have received. Joyful giving is a testament to our faith and an expression of our love for God and His people.

Giving abundantly helps us break free from the grip of materialism and cultivates a spirit of generosity. As we prioritize giving over accumulating, we experience the freedom and joy that come from investing in eternal treasures rather than temporary possessions. Our generosity can inspire others and create a ripple effect of kindness and compassion, furthering God’s work in the world.

By giving abundantly, we grow as disciples of Christ, reflecting His love and generosity to those around us. This practice not only strengthens our faith but also advances the mission of the church and impacts lives for eternity.

About this Plan

Becoming More Like Christ Through Your Church

From Acts 2 to Revelation 3, Scripture focuses on God’s work through the local church. Indeed, the local church is God’s 'plan A' for His mission on Earth, and He didn’t give us a 'plan B'. If we truly want to make a difference in this world, we will do so joyfully through our local church by serving others and serving the world.
