Hidden Grapes: Finding Purpose in Secluded SeasonsSample
Day 1: The Vinedresser’s Care
I am the true Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser. John 15:1 – Amplified Bible
Not long ago my husband and I took a trip to a vineyard in California. What was meant to be a romantic getaway became a precursor to our future. While we spent some much-needed time together, relaxing amongst the beautiful grapevines and scenic outdoors, God subtly sowed seeds of purpose into our hearts, leading us to move near that area half a decade later.
The move was difficult. Although my husband thrived in his new career, I struggled to adapt. I missed our friends and family, and my remote job left me isolated and lonely. I found solace, however, in visiting vineyards on the weekends. The serene landscape and enlightening conversations with vintners lifted my spirits and drew me closer to God. As I frequented the vineyards for peace and purpose, I began to find the role of the vinedresser fascinating and comforting.
A vinedresser is someone who nurtures, balances, and cultivates grapevines. They oversee every aspect of the vineyard, from planting and pruning to harvesting. Vinedressers understand vine characteristics and the intricacies of soil conditions and climate. This intimate relationship between the vinedresser and vineyard ensures a vast harvest of rich, flavorful fruit.
There is no wonder Jesus employs the vineyard metaphor to portray the bond between God, Jesus, and believers. In today’s scripture, we see that just as an earthly vinedresser aids grapes in prosperity, so too is God providing for and preparing us for our purpose even in seasons of isolation and dormancy. This powerful imagery resonated deeply in me upon our relocation near the vineyards of California. The truth became that even in seclusion, I could rest in knowing that God was working behind the scenes, He is our Heavenly Vinedresser. He understands that periods of discomfort lead to stronger, more fruitful vines, cultivating resilience and depth in our faith.
Are you experiencing a season of solitude that feels unproductive? Do you question your purpose? Take heart, you are far from abandonment. Growth occurs beneath the surface and God has promised never to leave or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6, 8). As our Vinedresser, His plans for us are for prosperity, hope, and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Join me tomorrow when we delve into the crucial role of vine balance and how it mirrors our journey of preparation for God’s calling.
