Waiting with Purpose

Abraham Lincoln is one of the most revered presidents in our nation’s history—and a master of overcoming obstacles. As the sixteenth president, he basically single-handedly saved the union. Without his determination, drive, and leadership abilities, it is likely that America would look very different today. Because of his character traits, Lincoln is routinely listed by many as our greatest leader. However, Abraham Lincoln endured his share of failures or setbacks amid his accomplishments. He lost his job, failed in business, had a nervous breakdown, and lost elections.

Any combination of his struggles might have sent lesser men fast on their way to other pursuits. But Lincoln was different. He felt he had a destiny to serve and lead despite the many challenges he faced.

Lincoln had many lesser known accomplishments while he was waiting on the bigger things. He was elected company captain of his Illinois militia in the Black Hawk War. He was appointed as postmaster in New Salem and deputy surveyor of Sangamon County. He received almost no formal education but worked hard and was granted a law license. He practiced law in the U.S. District Court.

Setbacks need not lead to defeat. The example of Lincoln’s life is an encouraging one, which is why it is often used to illustrate overcoming failure. But some may overlook the fact that Lincoln was learning along the way; he was using the opportunity to un-fail with every failure he faced. He made use of his waiting time and learned endurance, patience, and tenacity. He learned compromise and focus. He learned enough to save a nation.

Lincoln’s flexibility and quick recovery allowed him to advance to the highest office in our country. With each obstacle, he simply doubled down with even greater focus. The drive to succeed and meet his calling was important to him. In fact, he ultimately gave his life to it.

Lincoln often dreamed of a fast-moving ship taking him to a dark, distant shore. In a way, Lincoln knew he was giving his life to a cause. But the cause was worth it to Lincoln. He had endured the defeats. He had spent the in-between times in productive learning. When the time came, Lincoln saw the way through the bloody struggle that was the Civil War more clearly than most of those around him. He had been through many fires, and he knew how to endure and wait with purpose.
