What Is the Day of the Lord?

DAY 5 OF 7

Living in union with Christ

And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh… (Acts 2:17, Joel 2:28)

We know that the great day of the Lord will come at Jesus’ return. Yet at the same time, Acts tells us that the day of the Lord has already come when the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost. God showed His power to the Jews through signs like tongues and prophecy. This confirmed the message of the apostles that Jesus had been raised from the dead.

But there is more to the pouring out of the Spirit than that. Jesus promised His disciples that He would always be with them, even to the end of the earth (Matthew 28:20). This is made possible by what happened at Pentecost. Believers received the Holy Spirit to live in Christ and to do His work.

Christ is glorified through the Spirit that lives in us. In this sense, Pentecost indeed looks much like Jesus’ return. On the day of the Lord when Jesus will return, believers will be in the presence of Christ forever, but on the day of the Lord at Pentecost, Christ already came to live with the believer through the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit that will guide us into all truth.

The question is, though, are we willing to be guided by Him?
