Know for Certain: Answers for Those Who Doubt (Vol. 2)Sample
"Can we be restored?"
An ancient Japanese art form, called “Kintsugi,” repairs broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold, silver or platinum, often making the pottery more beautiful and sometimes more valuable in the process. Kintsugi artists show us the potential for great beauty in flaws and imperfections. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve ushered sin into the world; because of this, every human born since then has a sinful nature. We are all born broken. No matter what we do or how hard we try, we cannot change our sinful nature.
Brokenness is evident all around us and in our own lives. We see it in poverty, oppression, famine, war, divorce, addiction, and other destructive forces in our world. The Bible says our hearts are desperately wicked and we all need a Savior. We have gone our own ways and have tried to become like God. Several Bible passages refer to God as a potter and to mankind as the clay in His hands. He created each of us with dignity and purpose, but because of our sinful nature, we are like broken vessels. In His incredible love, God made a way for us to be restored to our original design through Jesus’ death and resurrection. He takes our imperfections and brokenness and creates something stronger through the work of His Holy Spirit.
Our relationship with our Creator can be restored through faith in Jesus. We can express our faith through prayer:
Lord Jesus, I need You. I confess I have offended you by trying to live apart from You and have brought shame on myself. Thank you for taking my sin and my shame, forgiving me and for inviting me into your family. Make me the kind of person You want me to be. Amen.
Even though each of us is born with a sinful nature that drives us to stray from God, we can know for certain that through faith in Christ’s death and resurrection, God restores our relationship with Him. As we yield to Him, He transforms us into new, beautiful creations.
