Rediscovering Purpose as a Public ServantSample
Do you remember when you were inspired to join your department of service, be it police, fire, medical, or military? You committed to making the necessary changes to become the most desirable applicant. You had a burning desire within you to make a difference in the world. Whether you knew God then or not, your love for righteousness, peace, and justice drove you to apply.
This desire to serve is not a coincidence. Exodus 9:16 says, "But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." (NIV)
You have been raised for this moment. Whether you applied for this job at the age of 21 or 41, the Lord has prepared you for this duty. He has shown many public servants His power as they have encountered different situations in their work. Whether it is a full-blown conversation or a simple gesture of love towards someone in need, there is almost always an opportunity to share the love of the Lord in our work.
Whether you work in a small town or travel the world to work in multiple countries, a conversation with just one person can start an amazing chain reaction that spreads the name of the Lord throughout the earth. To achieve this, we must be open and willing to let the Lord guide us daily. Sometimes, it may only be a still small voice, but that voice can be enough to lead us to change someone's life. Have you ever considered how unique it is for a profession to allow you to regularly spread the love of the Lord in the darkest places of society?
Take a moment today to ask God to remind you of how it felt when you received the call about being accepted to embark on this adventure. Then, ask Him for help to rediscover that passion and remind you of your purpose. Ask Him to remind you of His priorities for you and whether or not your actions align with them. Finally, ask Him to guide you every day and in every encounter so that you may do His will.
