Building Belonging in a Lonely WorldSample
Devotion 6: The Power of Empowerment
In Acts 9-11, we learn about Paul's (Saul) transformation from a relentless persecutor of Christ's followers to a bold advocate for the faith. At the heart of this incredible conversion, Barnabas stands as an inspiring figure. He saw the potential in Paul when others rejected him out of fear, and he invested in Paul's growth, even inviting him to join him on his mission. Ultimately, Paul outshone Barnabus.
The story of Barnabas and Paul inspires us to consider our approach to supporting others. Instead of rushing to do things for them, we need to empower them by working with them. We must be mindful of the delicate balance of power in our relationships, especially when supporting those in need.
In our desire to help, we must avoid subconsciously disempowering people, which restricts potential and stifles growth.
To truly empower others, we must recognise and even create opportunities for them to step into their potential. This doesn't mean the journey won't have bumps along the way – it will, but the outcomes are worth it: their self-growth, their gaining confidence, their independence, and ultimately, them empowering others just as they were once empowered.
We see Jesus model this with the disciples as the gospels unfold:1. I do. You watch. 2. I do. You help. 3. You do. I help. 4. You do. I watch. 5. You do. Someone else watches.
Prayerfully Consider: Who has God positioned you to empower, and who has He positioned to empower you?

About this Plan
In this short devotional series, we will consider how we can play a role in helping others feel like they belong without causing damage to ourselves. Each of the six sessions is taken from The Belonging Course, a six-session small group course on the theme of Belonging, which is free for all UK churches.
