Back to the Basics

DAY 4 OF 5

The next spiritual discipline that will bring us back to the basics is the discipline of fasting. Fasting can oftentimes be neglected in discussions surrounding our faith, but it holds a unique and powerful place in deepening our connection to God. Fasting has never been about self-deprivation for one’s own sake, instead, it is a purposeful act of drawing closer to the Lord.

In a modern context, fasting can look like different things and take on various forms. Perhaps you have heard of a social media fast or the Daniel fast. These are both examples of fasts that do not involve a full abstinence from food. Although these are wonderful opportunities to set aside distractions, Biblical fasting strictly refers to voluntarily abstaining from food or water for a set period. The key is to use this time to pray, reflect, and draw near to God For some, it may seem like an unusual or unnecessary practice, but scripture shows that it has a powerful purpose.

Fasting creates space in our lives, allowing us to refocus on God. It is an intentional act of redirecting our attention away from the physical and natural things that may distract us and lead us toward the spiritual. Fasting has been a practice throughout the Bible, from Moses and Elijah to Jesus Himself. As a beautiful example in scripture of sacrificing pleasure or desire, we are called to practice this spiritual discipline just as others did. Fasting serves as a cornerstone in our spiritual disciplines.

Fasting anchors and aligns our hearts with God's purpose. When we fast, we experience a heightened awareness of our true dependence on God. It humbles us, making us aware of our need for His grace and mercy. Fasting allows us to break free from the distractions of daily life and center our focus on Him and Him alone. Fasting is not a practice to be done in vain or for show but a discipline that can lead to a deeper, more profound connection with God.
