The Gratitude Shift - Embracing Six Gifts You Already HaveSample
Gratitude Exercise
Today, we end the plan with a practical exercise of thanksgiving to God, allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us through it. We can do this for a few minutes or longer. At some point during the exercise, we will feel a lift in spirit as expressing gratitude takes on a life of its own.
For this, we must close our eyes and block everything out. You may look down at the floor if uncomfortable closing your eyes. Take a deep breath, and then start with the first thing or person that comes to mind.
You may say the words silently or speak out loud, whichever you prefer.
Begin by saying, “Thank You, Lord, for *fill in the blank *. Consider the thing or person you’re grateful for, and allow yourself to feel the gratitude for them. Think of it like the pleasure of writing a thank-you note at the exact moment you are experiencing gratitude.
As you sit in this attitude of gratitude, something else will come to your mind that you’re grateful to God for. Thank Him for it. Allow yourself to feel the gratitude in your heart.
And then another thing will come to your mind. Repeat the process of experiencing gratitude and thanking God for the blessing He has given you. Eventually, when you pull yourself away to continue your day and responsibilities, you will notice a change in your demeanor and a gratitude shift in your heart. This is the goal. Gratitude is the beginning of contentment and a barrier to envy.
Prayer:
God, You are a good Father. Please forgive us for our ingratitude. You give us what we need, sometimes even before we need it. You hear our prayers and answer according to Your excellent will towards us. Thank You for my uniqueness and Your plans for me. We don't have the words to describe who You are and how good You have been to us, but we won't let that keep us from saying, "Thank You" over and over again. May we always have grateful hearts towards You, Lord. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
