Awaiting the Promise
"But you will receive power [dunamis] when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." — Acts 1:8
After the crucifixion, the disciples of Jesus were filled with fear and uncertainty. Their leader and friend had died, and although he had risen and appeared to them, his subsequent ascension left them without direction, except for one instruction: Wait. They were instructed to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father, the coming of the Holy Spirit. This waiting period was not passive; it was a time of coming together, prayer, and preparation for the unknown. It was in this state of obedience and anticipation that the disciples found themselves when the day of Pentecost arrived, and with it, the power of the Holy Spirit that would transform them into bold proclaimers of the Gospel.
Their story encourages us to consider the importance of waiting for God's timing, seeking unity and strength in community, and preparing our hearts for the work He has for us. The disciples' transformation from fear to boldness is a powerful example of what the Holy Spirit can do in our own lives when we obey, wait, and receive.
What are you waiting for in your spiritual journey? How can you actively wait for God's promise in your own life?
Prayer: Lord, in the quiet seasons of waiting, may your Spirit prepare my heart for your plans for me. Help me to trust in your promise and timing, and fill me with the dunamis power to fulfill your purpose. Amen.
Prayer-Hold:(to carry throughout the day) "In waiting, I am prepared; in the Spirit's power, I am sent."
