The First Letter of John

DAY 4 OF 28

Fellowship With One Another

The Greek word we translate with “fellowship” (Koinonia) is a lovely word. It means “association, participation, community, and contact.” Some translations speak of “sharing life with each other”. When we are in the light, we have fellowship with one another. That means that we “participate and have contact” with God and with people. The early church devoted themselves, along with other things, to fellowship. When it comes to discipleship, fellowship should not be a ‘nice-to-have’, but a high priority.

Fellowship might have become a ‘churchy’ word that is only used in church-circles. But there is beauty in it, and a power that the church needs now more than ever. When our lives are in the light, as He is in the light, the opposite of passive isolation happens. We participate in His light; we actively take part in community and are in contact with people.

Devotional Question:

Am I a passive recipient in my relationship with God, or am I an active participant? Do I value fellowship with other people as highly as I ought to?

About this Plan

The First Letter of John
