Nothing Can Separate

Look beyond cats’ abilities to entertain, comfort, and cheer us, and you’ll discover that our kitties are experts at stealing the most valuable item on the planet: our hearts.

Any cat worth her tuna will burgle, hijack, or take over your heart before you’ve even decided to formally adopt her. One paw reaching through the kennel bars, one shivering, scared kitty huddled in the back of the cage, one plaintive mew or winsome gaze, and you’ve been officially captured. The cat now owns you and doesn’t give a flying flea that she resorted to thievery to make you captive. From here to eternity, this cat and all past, present, and future kitties will keep your heart enthralled.

Such intense devotion—both from you to your cats and from your cats to you—does come with some perks though. You can expect endless laughter from kitty hijinks, solid bathroom companionship, and an alarm clock that’s never late. Enjoy more snoofles, warm cuddles, and vegging out as you get through another cold winter.

Yet no matter how long or short that journey is, cats can remind you every day that nothing can steal away God’s love for you. Like a kitty who stays glued to your side when you’re sick or sad, God’s loving comfort won’t budge either. Even when we’ve been a bit naughty, God longs to restore us, leading us to the primo nap spot in the sun. And like a cat you cherish, God delights in you and loves you even more than the snuggliest snuggle or boopiest head boop. When cats steal our hearts, we can bet God’s love is as close as a contented purr.

Paws-itive Faith Step: In cold weather, get to know a neighborhood stray or feral cat by gradually earning trust, offering food, providing a warm shelter, or speaking in a kind, low voice. Resolve to treat vulnerable people as well as you do disadvantaged cats.

Lord, when cats steal our hearts, we can’t help but love them. Help us seek you daily as we encounter a love only you can give.
