Are You a Mary or Martha?

DAY 4 OF 4

There was a time in my life I was dealing with some medical issues and I was experiencing a lot of emotional ups and downs. Being a Martha, I was not quite sure how to handle that! My husband was so amazing. I would be lying in bed, and he would come in and sit with me, offering to give me a massage or run me a bath. I told him absolutely not! What I needed from him was not sympathy but someone to tell me to get my butt out of bed and do something. I needed to be snapped out of the funk I was in.

A few months after God healed me from those issues, I was helping a young woman who was battling depression. Not knowing her well, I asked what she needed. Do you know what she told me? She said, “I need people to stop telling me to get my butt out of bed and do something. I need people to stop trying to snap me out of this. I just need someone to hold me and tell me it is going to be ok. I just need someone to know how I’m feeling and feel it with me."

That is who Jesus is. That is what this story is about. This passage is showing us Jesus loves us so much that He is able to do either of those things.

He does not respond to each of us the same because we are not the same. Whatever we need from Him, He is going to provide. Isn’t that incredible?

First and foremost, God wants every single one of you to grasp how incredibly loved you are. How desperate He is to comfort you, in your own unique way, if you would let Him. You are deeply, deeply cared for by your creator.

Now once you wrap your minds around that. What is the next step? How should you respond? Scripture tells us we should be imitators of Christ, we should walk the same way He walked, we should follow in His steps, and we should love others as He loved us.

So, if God is showing us how Jesus responds to the different women, and we are supposed to be like Him, then I think the deeper message is God showing us how we are supposed to respond to someone who is different than us.

The question is, are you a Mary or a Martha? Did you discover more about yourself? I pray that you better understand that God does not love us the same. He loves us each in a unique and individual way.

About this Plan

Are You a Mary or Martha?

Are you a Mary or a Martha? There are a lot of different types of women in the world, but most of us relate to one of these sisters more than the other. Find out which sister you are more like and how you can use that knowledge to love others better. Plus, learn about the unique love Jesus has for you.
