2 Timothy: Endure, Encourage, Equip

DAY 7 OF 10

A living example and a tough line

When testing someone’s credibility, it is instinctual to look for two things: education and experience. And when it comes to spreading the Gospel, there is no better example than Paul. His life continues to inspire Christians today.

In chapter three, Paul has taken great pains to paint for Timothy a clear picture of how wickedness manifests itself in false teachers and how his own life is distinctly different.

No one likes the idea of suffering, and persecution is uncommon when Christians are the majority group and have influence in governmental institutions. However, for the early church and in many parts of the world today, Christian persecution is not only common, but it is also on the rise.

This should not be a surprise because the Scriptures are clear. As evil continues its rampant deception, it will try to destroy the Gospel and those standing in courage for the truth of Jesus Christ. As Paul says, “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12).

It begs the question we must ask ourselves: Will I be able to stand in courage for the truth of the Gospel when persecution comes? Just like Timothy, the inspiration gleaned from your mentors is always helpful. But real confidence comes from your own personal experience with Jesus and your belief in the divine origin of Scripture. It is through this intimate relationship that you will find true comfort, assurance, strength, courage, hope, and deliverance.

Your personal relationship with Jesus is the catalyst that propels you to spread the Gospel in love—even when you are up against evil and persecution. And with the knowledge of the Scriptures as your foundation, Paul says you are equipped to do every good work!

  1. Throughout Scripture, God reminds us to remember all He has done for us and how He comes to our aid. Can you list 10 times you know that the Lord has brought you through a tough situation?
  2. Paul says everyone who wants to live a godly life will be persecuted. What do you define as persecution today? Have you personally felt persecuted? What was your response?
  3. What does Paul mean when he says, “all Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16)? Do you believe this to be true? Why or why not?

About this Plan

2 Timothy: Endure, Encourage, Equip

From a cold, damp cell in Rome, Paul pens the most intimate letter found in the New Testament in a final effort to fortify Timothy, his fellow servant of the Gospel, before Paul’s impending death. Paul’s letter to Timothy is personal and full of wisdom, warnings, and encouragement as Paul teaches Timothy to be ready to spread the Gospel in and out of season. The question is, are you ready?
