Camp Fires Week 2

DAY 2 OF 5

Why is worship so important?

I once heard an older preacher ask a younger preacher what he felt was God’s favorite part of a church service, the preaching or the time of worship. Assuming the older preacher did not enjoy the music, the younger preacher stated, “Well, of course, the preaching!” A quick correction came from the older man. “God loves the time of worship more. After all, He is the Word, but He loves to hear His children sing His praises.”

Worship defined is any action that gives worth and glory to God. So, what good comes from our acts of worship? First, it takes the focus off of ourselves and involves the complete surrender of who we are to God. God cannot do much with us if we’re still “holding on to the reigns.”

Secondly, true worship occurs regardless of our circumstances because the one we’re giving worth to doesn’t change. We often think to ourselves, “I just don’t feel like worshipping today,” but true worship can occur on our worst of days because God’s faithfulness and goodness don’t change with our feelings or difficulties.

A final thought on the importance of worship comes from Deuteronomy 16:16-17 when instructions are given that no one should appear before the Lord empty-handed. My challenge is that we would think on all of God’s blessings we’ve received and give an offering of worship that is worthy of God’s goodness and greatness. Let our worship never pale in comparison to who God is.

Engagement Point:

Pray - God, you are great and powerful, but you’re also my friend. Help my thoughts and actions to bring glory and honor and fame to the Name above all Names. I will bring to you in private my gratitude and adoration for who you are and will openly and publicly declare my trust and love for you. Amen.
