GLEANINGS - Genesis

DAY 2 OF 33

The second chapter focuses on more details on the creation of the first man, the garden God placed him in, and the work God gave him to do.

What does it mean to be made in God's image?

Man and woman equally are created in the image of God. To be made “in the image of God” means humanity is connected to God by having a personal, moral, spiritual, and intellectual sense of being, just like God. God is a person having emotions, intellect, and will and so are we. Because we are persons and God is a person, we can have a relationship with Him.

Human beings are created with unique abilities absent from every other creature on the earth that mirror the divine nature of God. Our worth is connected to our Creator. So, human beings made in his image have great value.

But when human beings fell into sin in Genesis 3 the image was not destroyed but was defaced. Every single human being, no matter how much the image of God is marred by sin, illness, weakness, age, or any other disability, still has the status of being in God’s image and therefore must be treated with the dignity and respect that is due to God’s image-bearer.

Colossians 1:15 tells us that Jesus is the image of the invisible God. So, when we respond to Jesus, and He lives in us the image is restored and people begin to become the visible reflections of the invisible God. Romans 8:29 reminds us that we are being “conformed to the image of his Son.” Jesus is the perfect representative of the image of God, and we are being made like him. Does your life show forth Christ's image to the world around you?

APPLICATION QUESTION:

What implications do you think the image of God has for our work, purpose, and significance? What changes do you need to make in how you treat fellow human beings and fellow believers knowing that you are created and recreated in the image of God?

QUOTE:

Man was made in the image of God, and nothing will satisfy man but God, in whose image he was made. Charles Spurgeon

PRAYER:

Lord, I thank You that You have intricately created me, but though the image was marred, You died for me to restore the image. Help me to mirror Your image to the world today. Amen

About this Plan

GLEANINGS - Genesis

GLEANINGS is a one-year devotional through the Bible. It contains answers to key issues, application questions and quotes to think and apply, and a prayer of commitment at the end. The word Genesis means “beginning” and this book records the beginning of everything—the beginning of creation, man, sin, family, culture, and industry—except it does not deal with the beginning of God, because God has no beginning.
