DAY 34 OF 40

#BeAFriend (Chlöisu Burkhalter)

In the church where I grew up in, there was singing and we were taught that we should be “in concord.” This was usually the moment in which my thoughts began to wander off. I had no idea what was meant by “in concord.”

I did not come across the expression again for a long time until I read a book by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He interprets concept “of being in concord with each other” by saying that Jesus should be at the center of our fellowship. Jesus is the one who connects us. He is the one who can overcome all our differences. It is he who died for all of our weaknesses and imperfections.

Being a diverse community, unconditionally benevolent and uncompromisingly honest, does not guarantee that we are headed in the right direction. It is possible to do all that without being a divine community.

This is why it’s important for us to keep tuning to God and his heartbeat, putting him at the center of our fellowship.

A divine community does not come from the desire to be with other people. Divine community comes from the desire to live according to God’s will. The more we carry this desire within us, the more real our fellowship will be. We will feel connected to those people who carry the same desire within them, regardless how different and imperfect we are in other matters.

Actionstep:

Do you speak about your experiences with God and your challenges concerning your relationship to him, in your Smallgroup, among friends or family? Do you pray together? Today, tell someone in your surroundings what you are currently working through in your relationship with Jesus.
