You And Me Forever: Marriage In Light Of EternitySample
"Stop Focusing on Marriage"
If you take Jesus’ advice and stop focusing on your marriage, things are going to change. Maybe that’s a scary thought. You can probably envision all sorts of marriage problems that will crop up as a result. But Jesus is never wrong.
Honestly, most of the problems we experience in marriage stem from a lack of relationship with God, which means they are not really marriage problems. They’re God problems.
Jesus actually makes life pretty simple. He boils down the whole Law to a single command: “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). He tells us simply to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Matt. 6:33). David said that there was only one thing he wanted in life: to be with God and gaze upon His beauty (Ps. 27:4).
Take your eyes off of God and things fall apart. Take your eyes off of God and your marriage could fall apart. Jesus says it simply: “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
Take time to either acquaint or reacquaint yourself with God. This is not something that you can accomplish in an instant, nor is it a project you will ever complete. But you can’t strengthen your marriage without developing a habit of drawing near to God.
Discuss with your spouse: How does your relationship with God affect your relationship with your spouse?
About this Plan
