Finding Financial Balance: Planning

DAY 3 OF 5

COUNT THE COST

Who is Jesus talking to in Luke 14:28-33, and what type of planning is He referring to? Prior to this passage, the crowds were following Jesus, hoping for healing and wanting to hear His teaching. In today’s passage, Jesus tells the crowds and his disciples that they need to count the cost if they want to follow him. Jesus didn’t want blind, naïve commitment that expected only blessings and good days. Just as a builder estimates costs or a king evaluates military strength, a person must consider what Jesus expects of his followers. Being diligent in following Christ will cost you something. You must plan for whatever that cost might be and know that following God through the power of the spirit will be worth it, both now and in His eternal Kingdom.

Ask Yourself:

— Have I really committed to following Jesus?

— What is the cost of taking up my “cross” and denying myself?

— How can I invest in the eternal Kingdom to come?

Pause to Pray: God, I want to be a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. I’m not naïve enough to think you’re going to make everything in this life sunshine and roses. That is the great hope of eternity with you. For today and all my tomorrows, may I be diligent, steadfast, and faithful to follow you in all areas of my life, for you have faithfully loved me and saved me. Amen.

Take a Next Step: Have you found some good resources for financial planning? Have you invited a friend to support you as you plan? If you have, make sure you've scheduled time for both in your calendar. If you haven’t, take a step to do those things today!
