Walk Through Christian Theology: A Six-Day Devotional Exploring God’s Grand Story

DAY 4 OF 6

CHRIST: FROM A TO Z AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

Revelation 22:13: I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Most have heard the expression “From A to Z.” My high school band directors exemplified A to Z people. Every camp, practice, football game, parade, and especially competition, they went before us—the first to arrive, and they came behind us—the last to leave. We could focus on success, therefore, with no concern for the details.

In Revelation, John describes God the Father as “him who is, and who was, and who is to come” (Rev 1:4). Then Jesus Christ describes himself, saying “I am the Alpha and the Omega…who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev 1:8). Here Jesus uses the Father’s words to call himself God, equal with the Father. In addition, this phrase, “the Alpha (A) and the Omega (W),” uses the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet to indicate the beginning and the end (used again in 21:6 and 22:13). These words of Jesus are lightning bolts, marking Jesus Christ as the original A to Z person. He declares his own presence before time began and through eternity in the New Heavens and the New Earth. And Jesus Christ took care of things between the beginning and the end. He created us, came to earth as a human and died for us, paid the penalty for our sin as the spotless lamb, and rose again as the lion of Judah. He covered all the details between A and W for us, whom he loves.

APPLICATION: Trust actively in the Son of God—A and W and everything in between. Remember, he owns the details. Give him control over a specific detail in your life today, such as a nagging problem, your finances, or a troubled family member. Take time to meditate upon trusting Jesus with this detail throughout the day.

PRAYER: Dear Jesus, we stand amazed by you, eternal yet active in the present and holding all things together. We worship you, A and W and everything in between.
