Year of the Bible: Part Ten of Twelve

DAY 11 OF 30

What Shall We Do With This Gift?

Paul wrote to the Romans with vast experience in his ministry being vehemently rejected by most Jews but increasingly welcomed and embraced by Gentiles. God chose the people of Israel to display His presence and bring the Messiah to the world. When the Messiah came, however, His own people did not receive Him. God took the riches the Jews should have received and offered them to the Gentiles, who received the message with joy; thousands became followers of Christ.

Being given a gift, however, is not a cause for arrogance. Gifts reflect the kindness of the giver rather than the worthiness of the receiver. Historically, both Jews and Gentiles have lost sight of this. God promised to bless all nations through Abraham’s descendants, but they lost sight of the reason for their election, thinking themselves better than the despised Gentiles. On the other hand, sometimes Gentiles have copped a prideful attitude towards the Jews. Scripture solemnly exhorts both groups to recognize the plentiful riches available to all because all humanity is separated from God apart from His grace.

Question: What is your heart's response when people you dearly love defy Jesus or outright reject you?

Prayer: Today would be a great day to humble yourself again before the Lord, who extended His amazing grace and mercy to you though you never deserved it. Express your gratitude and pray for someone you know who has not yet accepted the gospel. Pray with love for them and faith that God can turn the hardest hearts.
