I'm So Blessed: A 3-Day Devotional With CainSample
If you’re like me, you haven’t thought much about math outside of calculating a tip for your dinner bill in a long time. I don’t mean to force it on you - but I think it’s important.
Let’s talk about the “Symmetric Property of Equality.” It’s essentially a fancy name for something your brain already understands to be true. This property says that if A = B then B = A.
In Psalm 1, the psalmist lays out a list of things that accompany being blessed. Maybe you’ve seen this before.. “blessed is the one who…”
I’ve always read this list as a way to get TO blessing. But today, I’d like to apply the Symmetric Property of Equality and see how to live FROM blessing.
Go ahead and read Psalm 1.
In this devotional we’ve talked about what it means to be blessed and the authority in this life that comes with being blessed. But now we’re talking about the practical posture of being blessed. What it should look like to walk as a blessed child of God.
Think of this as a daily checklist:
1. Am I walking in the way of the wicked?
2. Am I standing in the path of sinners?
3. Am I sitting in the company of mockers?
4. Am I delighting in the law of the Lord?
5. Am I meditating on His law day and night?
Similarly, look at “the beatitudes” in Matthew chapter 5. I love this list because it isn’t all happy stuff. Ya know.. “on my worst day.”
Do I find myself “poor in spirit”? Am I mourning? Do I truly find myself hungering and thirsting for righteousness?
By using these two scriptures on either side of the equal sign - hopefully we can start to see blessing not only as a finish line, but also as a starting block.
Here’s what I’m learning still. It is important to realize and see that we are blessed. Truly it is. But once we understand how blessed we are - it should be our mission to shout to the world about the ONE from whom all blessings flow!
My hope today, and every time we sing “I’m so blessed”, is to remind ourselves that being blessed isn’t about having things, but about BEING things. The fruit of being a blessed child of God is listed here and we say a lot to the world about His hand and His blessing when our lives display that fruit.
