Back to BasicsSample
Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise from the ends of the earth,
you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,
you islands, and all who live in them.
(Isaiah 42:10 NIV)
What is worship?
There are so many verses in the Bible that talk about us worshipping God. Whilst most people understand worship as the time in a Sunday service where we sing to God about His love, worship can be any act or action focused on letting God know how much you love Him and how awesome He is.
A definition of worship is to ‘revere, honour and pay homage to God.’
REVERE: This means that we are to worship God with respect and awe. He is God in Heaven, and we are His creation on earth. Let’s revere Him with all the respect and awe He deserves.
HONOUR: This means to treat God with high respect because of who He is. Like reverence, honour allows us to look up to God as the One who made the Heavens and the earth, performed many miracles, and loves His people wholeheartedly. We honour Him because of the position He holds.
PAY HOMAGE: This means to respect and revere God, noting the part He plays in our lives. Remembering Him in worship keeps our hearts supple and reminds us that we could do nothing without Him. He is the source of our very lives.
All three terms are very similar, and all mention respect.
Much like we respect our parents because they raised us and looked after us, we respect God as He created us and continues to provide for and love us.
Rather than confuse you with further explanations of what worship is, let’s look into how we can personally and practically worship God.
