Year of the Bible: Part Eight of Twelve

DAY 20 OF 30

Jesus: The Savior of Rebellious People

After studying the Old Testament for the last few months, our hope is that you have seen how the books collectively point to Jesus. Today’s video summarizes how each section of the Old Testament builds on and reflects each other, forming a solid case for why we need Jesus. The history of all humanity is steeped in the need for a Savior. Israel was rebellious and doubted God’s faithfulness repeatedly. If we are honest, there are similar patterns in our own lives.

As we make our way into the New Testament in the coming days, our prayer is that you will take time to reflect on how Jesus fulfilled prophecy. Embrace the mystery of what is not yet revealed and revel in the richness of all Jesus brought as the Messiah. The Israelites were waiting for the Messianic King to come, and the waiting was excruciating. The beauty of our place in history is the knowledge that He came!

Now, as we wait for His return to establish the new Heaven and Earth, we can relate to Israel’s weariness in waiting. The promise may linger, but God will keep His word. Meditate on the fact that God does not lie. Reflect on how Jesus’ ministry met the needs of the people where they were.

The purpose of God’s story has always been to restore humanity to a relationship with Him. Even in our rebellion, He is still faithful. As we move into the New Testament, remember that the backstory informs how we see God fulfill more of His intention. He will not give up on His pursuit of those He loves.

Question: What is your biggest takeaway from our study of the Old Testament?

Prayer: As we approach the New Testament, ask God to remind you what you learned in the Old Testament and bring clarity to things that may not have clicked before. Ask Him to give you new eyes to see Him as you have not before.
