DAY 12 OF 19

Acts 15

What’s Happening?

Despite many Gentiles coming to faith in Jesus through the apostles’ teaching, certain Jewish believers called Pharisees begin to insist that Gentiles must be circumcised in accordance with the Mosaic law in order to be saved.

Paul and Barnabas sharply disagree with the Pharisees and set out for Jerusalem to settle the matter with the apostles and elders of the church there. As they go, they tell the churches along their way of how many Gentiles are miraculously being saved.

Upon their arrival, Paul and Barnabas are welcomed by the church at Jerusalem. When the apostles and elders gather to discuss whether or not Gentiles must adhere to the law by being circumcised, Peter stands to defend their position.

Peter explains that it has been God’s will from the beginning to save all peoples, declaring that it is God who knows the heart and gives the Holy Spirit without prejudice towards anyone. He continues to assert that the yoke of following the law placed on the Israelites is one that no one has ever been able to bear, and in contrast, that Jesus freely offers salvation to everyone through grace.

The chapter ends with a disagreement between Paul and Barnabas that causes them to go separate ways with new ministry partners. The narrative follows Paul and Silas, who continue to travel the region strengthening local churches.

What do we learn?

It has been God’s will from the beginning of time to save people from every tribe, tongue, and nation through Jesus Christ. Believers in Him are no longer under the law, but under grace.

What should we do?

Testimony is powerful. Just as the apostles persuaded the Jerusalem council by telling stories of the many Gentiles who had been saved, you too can proclaim the truth that all God desires to save all people. If Jesus has saved you, think of someone in your life who you can tell your story to and share that He offers salvation to them, too!
