The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

DAY 281 OF 365

HEART CONDITION

This psalm holds the distinction of being one of the few psalms labeled “A Prayer of David.” Without question, David lifted his heart to the Lord in these verses. The introduction makes clear his poverty of spirit (v. 1). His cries for mercy continued throughout the day (v. 3). As men sought his life (v. 14), David sought the Lord. In the middle of this prayer — comparing his God to the gods of the world — he erupted in praise: “There is none like you, Lord; no deeds can compare with yours” (v. 8). However, he still confessed to having a divided heart, a heart not solely focused upon God. David believed it would take nothing less than a work of God to change him. So he prayed: “Give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever” (vv. 11 – 12, emphasis added).

Jesus, when people seek to hurt me, urge me to seek you in prayer and praise. Give me an undivided heart that beats solely for you. Amen.
