The Jesus Bible Reading PlanSample
GOD’S GUARANTEE
The repetition of the word “fallen” in verse two points to the fact that God has already predicted the destruction of Babylon, and his promise is coming true (Isa 21:9; Jer 51:8; Rev 14:8). The prophecies made long ago by Ezekiel and Daniel have now come true (Eze 38 – 39; Da 7; 11). Babylon, a vivid picture of a world system broken by sin, is now destroyed forever. Through God’s eternal power, sin and death are destroyed, including all the broken systems and structures that define this sinful world.
As with Jesus’ first coming, his second coming will usher in the fulfillment of the prophecies that involve his final work. Though no one knows the timing of Jesus’ return, God uses John’s words to continually remind this people that they have nothing to fear. Sin will not run amok forever. God will defeat it and destroy Babylon the Great and all it represents, once and for all time.
Jesus, help me to put my confidence not in the systems of this world but in your perfect, just power. I thank you and praise you for your promise to return, when you will make all things right. Amen.
