The Jesus Bible Reading Plan

DAY 145 OF 365

GOD BLESS THE KING

Psalm 21 is a royal psalm, meaning that it focuses on the king and his reign. While the subject matter may feel a bit foreign to today’s readers, it is yet a crucial concept within the Christian faith. God’s people were ruled by a king during Israel’s monarchical period, and the king was responsible for bringing God’s will to pass. The king held the highest calling of bringing justice and righteousness to bear in a way that blessed his people and the surrounding nations. Looking forward to Christ’s coming reign then, God’s people can relate to the expression of eager anticipation found in Psalm 21:6 — anticipation that the king will be granted “unending blessings.” Indeed, the deepest longing of humanity is for the perfect leader, the discerning judge, the ultimate provider, the champion of peace and the king of love. Thus, the church today likewise must pray for Christ to come as King over all. After all, “God placed all things under [Jesus’] feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way” (Eph 1:22 – 23).

Jesus, you are the champion of peace and the king of love. I ask you to be head over everything in my life. Amen.
