Jehovah Rapha: The God Who Heals

The earliest scrolls from ancient Egypt record a huge number of medicinal remedies and incantations that were invented and experimented on by its healers and physicians. The Israelites, therefore, who left Egypt with Moses were probably familiar with all of these remedies and treatments since they had lived in the land for a good 430 years. Their understanding of God had been hearsay thus far and so they didn’t yet know or experience the majesty of his power and presence.

The background to Exodus 15 was the magnificent splitting of the Red Sea before the Israelite community with Moses at the helm. Right after this incredible moment they began to complain when they came to the bitter waters of Marah. In response to their grumbling and murmuring Moses lays before them a promise with a condition to it. He says that if the people will listen to God’s voice and do what is right before Him by keeping all His commandments, He will not lay on them the diseases that had afflicted the Egyptians. He ended the command with an attestation of who this God was: “I am the Lord your Healer.” Wow!

He emphasises that He alone was the one who heals them, not the healers and remedies they had known in Egypt. The way God would heal and protect them would set them apart from surrounding nations if they so choose!

Today, as lovers of Jesus, we can choose to live a life of obedience to His voice and leading. It’s entirely our choice but the rewards of our obedience are still as operational as in the days of Moses and Joshua. While we may not be immune to sickness, seeing as we live in a broken world, we can be assured that our God will lead us through it, carry us when the need arises and take us safely to the other side.

Don’t allow what popular culture says on healing to drive your life. May your first option always be to get on your knees and speak to your Heavenly Father and wait on Him for direction.

No remedy or cure can bring deep healing. No earthly healer or physician can bring healing to our spirit and soul.

No treatment or lifestyle or diet plan, however healthy, can bring wholeness to our lives. True, lasting, life-altering healing comes from Jesus alone!
