God sent us Jesus. Ever since sin entered the picture in the Garden of Eden, God knew we needed a Savior. We needed Jesus to take our sins so that we could find freedom and redemption. Our sin discounted us from life eternal with God, because we were damaged goods. Darkness had entered our lives, and we were no longer fit to live a life in direct community with our Maker and that broke God’s heart! But when Jesus hung on the cross, He paid our debt. Our connection to God was back, and we have been given a chance at freedom.

So what do we need freedom from? Lots of stuff. The small things we know are wrong but do anyway make it easier to say yes to the bigger things we know we shouldn’t do. If you’re not careful you’ll wake up and be in a not-so-great situation. The lie you told your parents about where you were after school has now turned into a web of lies and you find yourself unable to keep anything straight anymore. The one time you started a group chat to talk about that one girl at school has now turned into constant gossiping to the point that people won’t tell you things anymore because you have a reputation for sharing everyone’s business. It’s stuff like that where it can feel like shame and heaviness have made a home in your mind, body, soul and spirit.

It’s that kind of heaviness that Jesus wants to free you from. How? Through acknowledging the bad, deciding to make a change, declaring that Jesus is your Lord and Savior, and having a group of Jesus followers who are holding you accountable and rooting you on! It’s not easy to get back onto the right path, but it’s NEVER TOO LATE. God poured out His life to bring you new life, and He’s ready to meet you exactly where you are.

Over the next few days, we’re going to learn about what freedom is, what we need freedom from, and how we can tap into the freedom offered to us through Jesus!
