Be a missionary
The growth of the Christian faith over the centuries has taken many paths. It is shared through families; it migrates as people move; it is picked up by travelers and carried along. But one of the most powerful forces is the intentional sending of missionaries.
Really the Great Commission of Christ makes all of us missionaries, called to make disciples of all nations. All of us are called to engage our communities with the gospel. But there is a special calling for those who choose to live as foreigners in another country in order to make Christ known.
St. Paul grew up in the eastern Mediterranean region, but the Spirit of the Lord led him westward, through what is now Turkey, Greece, and Italy: “From Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ. It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation. Rather, as it is written: ‘Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand’” (Romans 15:19-22).
Does the call to bring the Word to people of a faraway land stir your blood? Could you serve as a lay administrator, or do you have the stuff to learn another language fluently enough to teach? Could you plant the idea in the head of a young person you know with language talent and a spirit of adventure?
