Let Me Teach You

“... Let Me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29

Lord Jesus, in the way You say to us, “Let Me teach you…”, we can hear Your gentleness, compassion, sensitivity, and deep love for us. We hear that You know our pain, failures, sin, and temptations, yet You still want us yoked to Yourself. You, the creator of the universe, the One who laid the foundation of the earth and told the sea, “Thus far you shall come, and no further, and here shall your proud waves be stayed,” should tenderly and intentionally reach out to us and ask us to allow You to teach us, humbles us. It assures us at the same time of Your great love for us, a love fully covenanted to us and sealed by Your blood.

We feel completely secure, seen, loved, and satisfied. We know with You is where we want to be, where we feel at peace, and everything is as it should be. We know You, and only You can satisfy the longing and emptiness in our souls. This softens our hearts and washes away our pride, fear, and selfishness. We feel honored, understood, and fully loved. Your great love encourages us to take the step of faith to surrender to You and Your ways and be willing to listen, trust and obey You.

Jesus, as You teach us, we learn Your ways lead to life. In loving others and ourselves as You do - patiently, kindly, without envy and boasting, not being proud or rude or self-seeking or easily angered, keeping no record of wrongs, not delighting in evil, rejoicing in the truth, always protecting, trusting, hoping, and persevering - we find peace and fulfillment in our relationships, in life and in the joy we find in obeying You. In learning to be more like You, we find the same rest you have.

Charles Spurgeon writes it well when he says that, in imitating Christ and living as He would have us live, we find rest “from the turbulence of inward passion and the drudgery of self.”

Thank you, Jesus, for gently encouraging and reassuring us that there is nothing to fear about how You will teach us. We know You are humble and gentle, and You will teach us in the most tender, kind, and wise way possible. We trust and are secure in the knowledge of Your deep love for us and know that all You teach will bring us life in abundance and for eternity. Holy Spirit, please fill us and guide us to be more like Jesus. Please help us fully surrender our lives in obedience to Jesus and bring Him glory. Help us find rest for our souls as we walk yoked to You, Jesus, our precious Saviour and Friend.
