These Same Skies: 5-Day Devotional With Hillsong WorshipSample
THAT’S THE POWER
These Same Skies Devotional
Alexander Pappas | Day 5
There’s this old saying, “Tell the truth & shame the devil.” You might have heard it in Shakespeare’s Henry IV, from a southern preacher like Joel Osteen or through a variety of different colloquial avenues. You might have grown up completely fearful to even speak of the devil, like me, and found this to be an uneasy quote to hear. But is this statement perhaps onto something?
“That’s the power of Your Name, just a mention makes a way.” When speaking of the greatness of ONE thing, (in our case, the power of the Name of Jesus, but we’ll come back to that) sometimes a reminder of what it is greater THAN is in order. If I were to mention, Clorox bleach, and I told you with all the gusto I could muster, “it cleans really, really well,” to some extent, I might have piqued your interest. BUT when I tell you, “Clorox bleach kills 99.9% of germs,” it stands to reason that you now have a confidence in the product, that it’s greater than the challenge you face.
I’ve got a healthy reminder for you today, friend. The power of the Name of Jesus is not simply 99.9% greater than any of the enemy’s plans but is in fact FATAL to 100% of the schemes of the enemy’s camp. This is why we can sing with enthusiasm, “Your power is dangerous to the enemy’s camp!”
In Exodus 17, God is referred to as Jehovah-Nissi — God our banner. So, in the times where your doubts, fears and anxieties leave you desperate, remember the banner that is readily available to you. He is the God of miracles, of deliverance, of healing and salvation. He freed the man filled with demons, healed the blind man, brought Lazarus back to life, provided for 5,000 people from two fish and five loaves of bread and He is still doing miracles!
If you’re wondering how you can claim this Jehovah-Nissi banner over your life, it’s right here in John 14. “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
Be confident and encouraged today in this—the power of the Name of Jesus is accessible to you RIGHT NOW. Speak gospel truth, speak life and watch His victory claim the ground that the enemy had, because as we sing, He IS the same God now as He’s always been.
Reflection & Application:
Stay in the good fight of faith! Maybe things have been chaotic and turbulent around you lately. Friend, if the enemy has been attacking you, keep your head up and remind your soul of all God has done, just as David the psalmist did (Psalm 103). What ground in your life is the enemy camped out in? Begin to claim this ground as the Lord’s and believe for a victory! The battle belongs to Him, and His Spirit is on the move, breaking strongholds and unravelling shackles. Today, step out in confidence and thank God for triumph.
Prayer:
Jehovah-Nissi, God, as I fight this battle, You are a banner over me. Your Word is sure and steadfast. I believe, right now, that You are already beginning to do the impossible. Holy Spirit, I thank You that You’re with me and I claim victory over [insert your situation] right now in the mighty, matchless Name of Jesus! In Your Name I pray, AMEN!
