[Life Of David] The Bigger They Are The Harder They Fall

DAY 4 OF 6

The Victory Comes From The Lord

Victory from the Lord often comes in the strangest and most unexpected ways. Would you think a teenager with a sling and a stone—that's a shepherd’s equipment—was someone using something people expected would  kill a giant? Still, David steps forward and says something like, “Goliath, I’m going to take you out because victory is in the Lord. You have defied God. You have defied the armies of God. You have shouted out against Him.”

In the Old Testament, stoning was the penalty for blasphemy. Goliath did not know that he was trampling the law of God when he cursed and said all the things he said. This is why God orchestrated this plan by David taking a sling and some stones, rather than using the armor and sword of the king or a soldier. God had already planned to demonstrate that the victory was His.

Why did David have five stones? In case he missed. When we are fighting our battles, we need to be prepared and also trust Jesus. That is how we get the victory. David takes one stone, slings it, and strikes down the Philistine. Then David kills him. To get that victory, God does something very expected. Blasphemy brought stoning in the Old Testament. However, God used David, an unlikely character who was just a kid delivering cheese and bread to the troops. David was not even old enough. You had to be 20 to fight in the army, and David was just a teenager. God used David to win the battle and make Goliath fall. And then, David used Goliath’s own sword to kill him after he fell.

American preacher and theologian Jonathan Edwards once said: “Christ came into the world to destroy the works of the devil. And this was the very thing that did it...the blood and death of Christ. The cross was the devil’s own weapon, and with this weapon, Christ overthrew the devil, just as David cut off Goliath’s head with his own sword.” The devil was defeated by the cross of Christ. Many times God uses our enemies’ own weapons to gain victory over them.

Just as David did, we will see the victory coming when we learn to trust completely in the Lord. The victory comes from Him!
