Pursuing Your Purpose

DAY 2 OF 5

Before you can understand your purpose, before you can experience unimaginable joy, you must start with understanding the mission your Heavenly Father has for you.

To begin, you need to understand the difference between your mission and your purpose. Your mission is what God desires for you to accomplish. Your purpose is your assignment in accomplishing that mission. To express it another way, your mission is why you do it. Your purpose is how you do it.

Now, all Christians have the same mission. Our mission is to glorify God. That is why the Bible reminds us, “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19‑20). And “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Glorifying God is a phrase often heard in church. Glorifying something means to magnify it. Do you remember when you were in a high school science class, and you took a smudge you could hardly see, put it on a small piece of glass, and slid it under a micro‑scope? Looking into the lens, you saw particles that were invisible to your naked eye. The lens in the microscope magnified the image on the glass.

In the same way, our mission is to magnify God in our lives. Everything we do or don’t do, and everything we say or refuse to say, should draw attention to who He is. In the Christian context, glorifying God means it is obvious to everyone around you that your relationship with Jesus Christ is the center and guiding force in your life. Glorifying God is your mission. It means that you obey His commands and follow the teachings of the Bible. It is trusting Him with your life.

But what about your purpose? Well, your purpose comes from finding your assignment—what God designed for your life.
