School of the Spirit: Living the Holy Spirit-Empowered Life Sample
Day 4: Walking in Step With the Holy Spirit
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25).
What does it look like to walk in step with the Holy Spirit? Jesus and the apostles are our examples for living naturally supernatural lives. Amazing, powerful things happened as Jesus and the apostles went about their everyday lives, walking with everyday people in everyday situations. The only difference that made them extraordinary is that they had the power of the Holy Spirit in and upon them, and they were led by Him.
The apostle Paul wrote specifically about walking in the Spirit, and he made the point that this walk would keep us from living a life motivated by our flesh. He said,
Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh. (Galatians 5:16–17).
Walking in the Spirit is a supernatural way of living, driven by the desires, abilities, and purposes of God. Paul recognized the internal battle that takes place in all of us. As long as we live in our physical bodies, we will have ongoing struggles and battles with the residue of our old, sinful natures. Our old natures try to pull us back into our ungodly patterns of thinking, ungodly attitudes, and ungodly appetites.
Did you realize the Holy Spirit has desires for you? He has dreams and aspirations for you according to the will of the Father. The Holy Spirit continually intercedes on your behalf. He doesn’t want your fleshly desires and cravings to pull you in all directions. The Holy Spirit is jealous for you. He has things He wants you to do with Him, for Him, in Him, by Him, and through Him. The Holy Spirit has desires that come expressly from the Father, and He wants to partner with you.
How can you know you’re hearing the Holy Spirit? He speaks to us in a variety of ways. Sometimes we hear His voice in our minds. What He tells us to do will never violate His Word, His character, or His ways. He can also reveal things in visions or dreams. When we walk in the Spirit, we give God the opportunity to direct our steps, focus our eyes, and use us as vessels for His good pleasure.
Holy Spirit, I want to partner with you. I submit every part of my life to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
